This is why I don’t live in Kansas anymore

For those of you who have never experienced a tornado, you should know that they can be big, nasty and destructive.
Growing up in Kansas, I “saw” my fair share of tornadoes. Although I must admit, I have never actually seen one in person. I prefer to hide underground with my head between my legs. (Yes, we were taught how to do this in grade school. It’s part of the core Kansas curriculum!)
My last encounter with a tornado was in Lawrence in spring 2003. I had just moved from Seattle to Kansas and was working on my masters at KU. I hid in the basement of Watson Library, huddled around a radio with about a dozen other people listening to the tornado play-by-play on the local NPR station. This tornado hit an apartment complex south of town and threaten to plow straight through campus… lucky for us, it picked up and flew over “the hill” and landed north of Lawrence.
Typically, it’s the western part of Kansas that gets hit the worst. As seen with the tornado that destroyed Greensburg, KS last weekend. Have you seen the video yet?
Three local storm chasers become celebrities for the only known video of the twister that destroyed Greensburg, Kansas. Their video gives the only ground level, up close view of the 1.7 mile wide tornado that hit the small town last Friday night. See it in Local storm chasers catch Greensburg tornado on film.
